The latest dance + music installation piece I've made with Choreographer Emily Johnson and Catalyst is called Niicugni (Listen) and premiered September 21 at Florida State University's Seven Days of Opening Nights Festival at The Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC). Niicugni (Llisten) is the second part of a trilogy that began with The Thank-you Bar, which just won a 2012 "Bessie" award for "Best Performance" at the awards ceremony at The Apollo Theater in Harlem, on Oct 15. For Niicugni, we're collaborating with musician / composer Bethany Lacktorin, dancer Aretha Aoki and Lighting designer Heidi Eckwall, and will all be performing the piece live on tour through 2013, including 4 shows in NYC at The Baryshnikov Arts Center Jan 9-12 as part of the 2013 Coil Festival.. The new piece features a set of hand-sewn fish-skin lanterns, ten of which function as speakers for our installation soundtrack. The Niicugni tour comes to Minnesota on April 21 at O'Shaunessy Theater in St Paul.
The GRAVE TRIO is myself, Ryan Lovan, and Ben Durrant, (former rhythm section/production team for Roma di Luna) and starting last winter, we've been playing as both an instrumental trio and as a backing band for Channy Leaneagh (Polica) and Duluth singer-songwwriter Toby Thomas Churchill (The Alrights). We've developed several new instrumental pieces and have played a few shows and posted some early recordings on our FACEBOOK PAGE. We're excited to record more in the studio this december. Our next showis Saturday Dec 29 at Harriet Brewing in south Minneapolis. (see gigs below)
Check out this great video for Toby Churchill's song "Belong".
BLACKFISH, my experiemental improvisation duo with composer / multi-instrumentalist Joel Pickard, finally released our TYB Tour Collection of 8 CDs last FALL 2011, with special concerts in Minneapolis and New York to celebrate. (Click on links for more info) The limited edition, individually numbered and letter-pressed CD packages were designed by Scott Ponik and look amazing. They're nowavailable for purchase through the Catalyst online store as either individual discs or as the 8-CD box set.. There are also new videos from our various BLACKFISH shows on the Catayst vimeo page, with more to be added soon. (Headphones recommended) You can also listen and/or download whole concerts or individual BF "tracks" at our bandcamp page. The final installment in the TYB Tour Collection, BF09: New York will have a Spring 2012 release with a show to celebrate in Portland, OR. We're also honored to have collaborated with acclaimed Irish Choreographer John Scott on the score to his new dance, Body Duet., which is getting rave reviews for recent premieres in Dublin. Body Duet features tracks from several of the BLACKFISH TYB Tour collection, as well as the track "Ghost Dog" from Sans Le Systeme.
LATEDUSTER returned for our first show in over 6 years, performing at the Cedar Cultural Center on Friday Dec 16 2011 as part of a great DOSH bill. We performed a brand newsong, "Transformador", as well as several old tunes. Great photos and links at our Lateduster facebook page. Stay tuned for more developments....
UNGUIDED, the Bonnie Prince Billy-meets-Dinosaur Jr. band I'm in with ex Roma di Luna guitarist Ben Durrant celebrated the release of our 4th full length CD Visible From Space in February. Live shows are rare, but next thursday Aug 30 is another one at the 331 Club. Listen and / or download tracks at our bandcamp site.
Roma di Luna has disbanded, sadly. Channy's new band, POLICA, is amazing and Alexei's Kill The Vultures have a newrecord they're about to release. Ben, Ryan and I are playing with Duluth singer-songwriter Toby Thomas Churchill (The Alrights) who recorded his great solo debut record DEATH with Ben at Crazy Beast. Here's a clip of us performing "Ghost Dance" from our "Last" Roma show, without Alexei, in Luvurne, MN In October.
The Thank-you
Bar, the acclaimed dance + theater + music piece created with choreographer Emily Johnson and composer/musician Joel Pickard, continued touring last fall to NYC at New York Live Arts/ DTW Nov 9-12 to packed houses and rave reviews. Joel and I are touring nationally with the piece
and performing our music score live. We are also performing a series of companion concerts as
BLACKFISH - improvised duet installations
- in each city we tour the Thank-you Bar. Our first concert took place
in Tallahassee in February 2009, and was recorded for release as BF01: Tallahassee, the first of our TYB Tour CDs. You can listen and download whole records or individual BF tracks at our bandcamp page. Emily Johnson/ Catalyst & BLACKFISH were recently named 2010 "Artists of The Year" on the cover of City Pages, a surprise and real honor. In October, we received the"Best Performance" award at the 2011 Sage Awards. You can read a recent review from The Houston Chronicle here. You can also read a total spoiler review from the New York Times here.
